Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar has been given a suspended one-match ban and fined after being accused of ball-tampering during the second test in South Africa, a senior Indian cricket official said today.

"I've been told about it verbally by the touring committee [in South Africa]. I'm waiting for something in writing from the match referee," said Indian cricket board secretary Niranjan Shah.

He said team officials told him Tendulkar had been fined 75 per cent of his match fee.

Tendulkar was summoned to a hearing by match referee Mike Denness yesterday after television pictures captured images of him allegedly using his fingernails to interfere with the seam of the ball on the third day of the test in Port Elizabeth on Sunday.

Shah also said batsman Virender Sehwag had been suspended for one match for "excessive appealling" and would miss the third test in Centurion starting this Friday.

Skipper Saurav Ganguly, opening batsman Shiv Sunder Das, wicket-keeper Deep Dasgupta, spinner Harbhajan Singh and Sehwag were all fined 75 per cent of their match fees for excessive appealing.

Former England captain Denness is expected to make an official announcement later today.
