An 18-year-old man has died following a car crash in Co Laois in the early hours of this morning.

The crash happened on the R433 between Rathdowney and Abbeyleix at about 3 am.

The road is currently closed at Middlemoun Gardai are at the scene diverting traffic. The road is expected to re-open to traffic this afternoon.

Elsewhere, the teenager killed in a car crash in Co Leitrim on Tuesday evening has been named.

John Williams (17) from Derrylustia, Drumkeeran, Co Leitrim died after the car in which he was driving hit a parked lorry at Sheena, Drumkeeran at about 10 pm.

His female passenger (16), received serious injuries and is recovering in Sligo General Hospital. Her condition is described as stable.

The latest fatalities takes the number killed on Irish roads so far this year to 274.

Last Christmas 18 people were killed or seriously injured over the Christmas period.
