An 18-year-old student stabbed to death in an upmarket area of south Dublin early this morning has been named.

An 18-year-old student stabbed to death in an upmarket area of south Dublin early this morning has been named.

Gardaí in Donnybrook named him as Sean Nolan from Griffith Court, Fairview, Dublin 3.

Detectives said the incident occurred at Waterloo Road in Donnybrook shortly after 4am. It is believed Mr Nolan was walking along the road with two other students who were out celebrating the end of school term.

All three were from the northside of the city and it is thought that one of them asked another teenager for directions when row developed. The teenager then went into a house nearby and came out with a knife which he used to stab the 18-year-old in the upper body. A 17-year-old man was arrested in a nearby house a short time later.

"An-18-year old man was removed to St Vincent Hospital where he was pronounced dead," a Garda statement said.

The scene remains sealed off today for technical examination and an incident room has been set up at Donnybrook Garda station.

The 17-year-old man is being detained at Donnybrook station under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Gardaí have asked anyone who was in the area at the time or who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact them at Donnybrook station.

Superintendent Liam Hogan, who is heading the investigation, said: "We are appealing to the public to come forward and assist us."

"Anyone who was in the area of Waterloo Road, Baggot Street, Mespil Road or Leeson Street between 3.30am and 4.30am should contact us in Donnybrook. "Any information will be treated in confidence."
