"Grab small enemies with a grappling hook and throw them at bigger enemies." That little instruction appears early in Capsized and it's a good omen: while imperfect, Capsized has a number of nifty game mechanics. In this 2D platform/exploration/shooter, you play an astronaut who crash-lands on an alien planet. You must do the usual stranded sci-fi stuff (rescue colleagues, find beacons), and of course, survive your new habitat. The planet is a lush, organic but hostile environment filled with untrustworthy flora and fauna. The aforementioned grappling hook can be used to move obstacles, snag enemies and even create makeshift shields. You also have the usual laser-type weapons and a rocket pack. A few puzzles will tax your lateral thinking. Unfortunately, Capsized is hampered somewhat by some pernickety controls and goalpost-moving challenges (such as randomly sticky surfaces and aliens who are essentially the same colour as their background). But it's a likeable retro game, with enough neat ideas to justify its existence.
