Breach

The low-budget, download- only Breachis an ambitious project, bravely wading into one of the most competitive genres in gaming and taking on some of the biggest titles. Call of Duty,the Haloseries and Battlefieldare fighting tooth- and-nail for the first-person- shooter audience. In fact, Breach is only a multiplayer online FPS, with no single- player campaign. Logistically this can be tricky: my first three attempts to join a game failed, but once you click in with a group, you can play against them for hours, as long as the host doesn't sign off and shut it down. It's a little rough around the edges, but all of the essentials are there: decent sense of environment (with destructible objects), satisfying weapons and clear objectives. I especially liked the convoy- defending task, but there are also more traditional ones, such as capture the flag.
