THERE was a new political landscape in Europe thanks to the vision of Dr Helmut Kohl the "Taoiseach said at a joint press conference with the German Chancellor following their meeting, at Government Buildings.

Mr Bruton said they had agreed it was "very important that the European Union should be seen "to be active on a world scale and, internally, in the battle against organised crime".

Dr Kohl said organised crime, especially the drugs mafia, was a "particularly important issue that would be on the agenda for Saturday's EU summit meeting. The citizens of Europe are expecting it of us that we show great determination in combating this particular threat."

The Taoiseach said he had briefed the Chancellor "quite fully" on recent developments in Northern Ireland. He had also expressed his appreciation to Dr Kohl for his very very strong words of support" for the all party talks and the peace process in general.
