A media lobby group is appealing to France and Pakistan over the release of a French journalist arrested after sneaking into Afghanistan.

Mr Michel Peyrard

Mr Michel Peyrard, a reporter for French weekly Paris Match, was caught entering Afghanistan disguised as a woman.

Reporters Without Borders has issued an appeal to the two governments to use all possible contacts to win his release.

He was allegedly found with a satellite telephone, tape recorder and other "spy equipment".

He was arrested with two Pakistani journalists.

The agency said Mr Peyrard was wearing a burqa, the full length veil which the Taliban require women to wear in public.

France's foreign ministry is trying to track down Mr Peyrard.
