The Taliban last night seized two United Nations warehouses filled with food for Afghanistan children, seriously hindering international efforts to ease hunger in the region, a UN official said today.

Ms Catherine Bertini, executive director for UN'S World Food Program, said that Taliban forcefully seized wheat supplies in warehouses in Kabul and Kandahar.

About 7,000 tonnes of the wheat taken by the Taliban represented more than half of the agency's food aid in Afghanistan.

"Our staff was asked to leave because the military had taken over both warehouse", Ms Bertini told reporters.

WFP has only six warehouses in Afghanistan and currently feeds about 1.7 million people.
