The pharmaceutical company Syntex Ireland Ltd, in Clarecastle, Co Clare, yesterday welcomed the Environmental Protection Agency's decision to grant an integrated pollution controlled licence for the operation of an incinerator on its site at Clarecastle.

In a statement the company said it was clear from an initial reading that the licence's conditions were in line with those which already made Irish licensing conditions among the strictest in the world. The company intends to study the licence in detail before commenting further on the terms under which it is being granted.

The statement added: "It is essential for the future operation of the company that licensed emissions meet new legislative requirements which will come into force before the tad of 1997."
