Bushfires destroyed the set of popular TV soap Home and Away today as searing summer temperatures wreaked havoc around Australia's biggest city.

The fires swept through the Jackaroo Ranch at Annandale, north west of Sydney, where Channel 7 has filmed many of the scenes for the soap for the past 15 years.

Executive producer John Holmes said there will be little left of the caravan park seen in the programme run by the Fletcher family in the fictitious hamlet of Summer Bay.

"Apparently, there's nothing remaining of the caravan park. The house is a stone house, but the roof had collapsed and parts of the wall and some of the veranda had all gone," said Holmes.

No one was hurt but caravans and mobile homes were all destroyed in the fire and the house will have to be rebuilt.

By coincidence, producers were planning a bushfire in the series but that idea has now been shelved.

Storylines will not be affected because filming is about four months in advance.
