All five people in a twin engine light aircraft were killed when it crashed into a mountain in western Switzerland today, police said.

Footage from Swiss television showed silver-coloured wreckage high up a snowy mountain.

A police spokesman told Swiss broadcaster SF1 it was not yet clear why the aircraft, which took off from Geneva airport, had crashed after sending out a distress message just before midday Irish time.

An army helicopter discovered the wreckage at Pt de la Forcletta, some 3,000 metres above sea level, the police said, adding that the identities of the victims had not yet been determined.
