The latest case was a schoolgirl in Roscommon where health officials were attempting to trace all youngsters who may have been in contact with her.

The Department of Health said two more cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours bringing the total to 51, including just four in-country transmissions.

Parents and staff met health chiefs at the Roxboro National School to discuss the risks to pupils and also advise on precautions.

Principal Michael Cleary said the school was informed by the parents of the affected pupil yesterday evening.

The school has been working with the Health Service Executive and informed all parents this morning of the situation, he told RTÉ's News at One.

He said the school had called a meeting for parents later this afternoon. HSE officials will also attend.

Mr Cleary said the pupil "is doing well" and he was hopeful they would make a full recovery.

The five-teacher school with 130 pupils closed for the summer holidays earlier this week.

The HSE will release a statement later today.

Meanwhile, one new case was confirmed in the North yesterday, bringing the number of cases there to 34.
