Gardaí are trying to establish a motive for the killing of a man in Limerick.

Gardaí are trying to establish a motive for the killing of a man in Limerick.

The 43-year-old, named locally as Gerard McMahon, was found with a number of stab wounds outside a house at Lenihan Avenue, Ballinacurra Weston.

Gardaí arrived on the scene after being alerted by ambulance paramedics at about12.35am today.

The man was taken to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Investigating gardaí at Roxboro Road said they were examining the circumstances surrounding the death.

The scene has been sealed off for a technical examination and State pathologist Marie Cassidy has been asked to attend.

Gardaí also appealed for witnesses.

It is believed the victim was from the nearby Raheen Square area of Limerick.

City mayor Jim Long, who knew the man, said he was horrified by the killing.

“I’m shocked and horrified, I knew the man very well. I know his family very well,” he said.

Mr Long appealed for the perpetrators to come forward and give themselves up.
