Most of the Special Olympics athletes delayed due to visa difficulties are expected to participate in the games.

A spokeswoman for the games told ireland.comthe athletes from Jordan, China, Namibia, Uzbekistan, Guadaloupe and Chad were now en route following some hold-ups.

She said she was hopeful that most athletes will arrive in time to participate in the games, which start this weekend, although up to 50 may not make it to their host towns.

It is understood that most of those who were delayed had problems with transit visas to allow them travel through other countries. There was no difficulty with the paperwork needed for the athletes to enter Ireland.

The delayed athletes will travel direct to Dublin where they will be accommodated in a number of Special Olympics "villages" during the games.

There is still doubt over the fate of the team from Cameroon, which was to stay in Spiddal, Co Galway. The athletes were to arrive this week, but the games committee is unsure whether they will make it to Ireland.

The official opening ceremony takes place in Croke Park in Dublin on Saturday night. Some 70,000 people are expected to be present. However, all the free tickets for the event are gone.
