Basques joined compatriots from across Spain today in mass protests against escalating violence by ETA, amid commemorative services for the victim of the latest attack attributed to the armed Basque separatist group.
Basque governor Mr Juan Jose Ibarretxe and Madrid government spokesman Mr Juan Jose Lucas attended a mass in San Sebastian, the capital of the Basque province of Guipuzcoa, to commemorate newspaper executive Mr Santiago Oleaga Elejabarrieta, who was shot dead in the coastal town on yesterday in a suspected ETA attack.
Oleaga's murder was the eighth this year to be blamed on ETA and the 31st since ETA ended a 14-month truce in December 1999.
Hundreds of people turned out for the service, which was conducted by the Bishop of San Sebastian, Juan Maria Uriarte, and covered by Basque riot police.
