Southampton chairman Rupert Lowe tonight sneered at reports that manager Gordon Strachan is set to become the new manager of relegation-haunted Leeds.

Strachan, who inspired Leeds to the title in 1992, has been strongly linked with a return to Elland Road, even though the Yorkshire club are bottom of the Premiership and £80million in debt.

But a defiant Lowe stressed there had been no approach from Leeds for Strachan's services and angrily dismissed suggestions that his relationship with Strachan had become strained.

Asked what the situation was regarding the rumours surrounding Strachan and the Leeds job, Lowe told Sky Sports News:

"There isn't any situation as far as we are concerned. We have not had an approach which we should have if they (Leeds) want our under contract manager. When they break cover we will deal with it."

Lowe suggested that Leeds were the most likely source for the rumours about Strachan which have persisted throughout this week.

"We have a sound financial base whereas they have a caretaker manager (Eddie Gray), are bottom of the table and have big debts so it is more likely to have come from them. They need to do something radical."

Lowe, stressing that he and Strachan are still on good terms, added: "I guess the process of softening a manager up for a move is to suggest that all is not well in our camp but I can assure you that is not the case.

"There is nothing to it. Gordon and I have a great relationship. There is no reason for us to fall out. He's a great companion and a great coach."
