The Dublin Council of Trade Unions (DCTU) is to send a "letter of solidarity" to the twelve prisoners incarcerated for blockading bin lorries in Dublin.

The letter will be submitted to Mountjoy Prison tomorrow when union members and anti-bin charges campaigners march in the city demanding the twelve be set free. They will also be marching against the introduction of waste charges by authorities in the capital.

The letter says the DCTU has "pledged to engage in a campaign among members of trade unions to force the Government and the local authorities to provide clean drinking water, sanitation and domestic refuse collection from central funding to all citizens.

"We have also sent a letter to the Minister for Justice demanding your immediate release."

Protesters received a boost to their campaign after the DCTU voted overwhelmingly this week to give it its backing.

Campaigners have called for a "massive" demonstration in Dublin tomorrow after ten more people joined Mr Joe Higgins TD and Cllr Clare Daly in jail. All twelve, including a breastfeeding mother, were jailed for defying a High Court injunction prohibiting them from blocking bin collections.

The march begins on Parnell Square at 12 noon.
