Gardaí investigate alleged intimidation of council official

Gardaí in Co Donegal are investigating an alleged campaign of intimidation by an individual against a council official, including the sending of racist emails signed with the official's name.

The campaign started about a year ago after an individual was refused housing by Donegal County Council.

Abusive emails were subsequently sent to staff and the official concerned responded saying the housing application would be considered in the normal way but that such offensive correspondence would not be entertained.

The individual later allegedly registered web domain names in the council official’s name in order to pursue a personal campaign against him.

Gardaí investigated the matter and, it is understood, a file was prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. It is also understood computer equipment was seized as part of the inquiry.

The alleged intimidation ceased for a period of time but recommenced on Thursday when the individual concerned both texted and phoned the official on his mobile number while he was at home.

Emails were sent to media organisations in the official’s name on Thursday night and Friday morning.

The email read: “Hello, this is [named official] of Donegal County Council. I am sick of n*****s in Donegal.

“We are starting a new political party. National Front Ireland. All are welcome to join,or to attend one of our meetings. Best Wishes, [named official] Donegal County Council.”

Sources said the council’s solicitors had written to the individual concerned.

Gardaí are now also investigating the latest contact with the official and the emails sent in recent days.

A Garda spokesman said he could not comment on named individuals.
