Six people - including an eight-year-old boy - had a lucky escape when the boat they were sailing in sank in Co Donegal this evening.

The boat - described as a small trawler sank in area between Donree and Portsallon beach in Lough Swilly at around 7 p.m.

A Garda Water Unit was in the area at the time and managed take all six people from the water. A 999 call from a mobile phone one of the people had with them alerted gardaí.

When the Garda Water Unit arrived all six were in the water for around 20 minutes. The eight-year-old boy, a woman and two men were airlifted to Letterkenny General Hospital. The other two men were by road. All six are being treated for shock.
