An armed gang fired shots at gardaí as they made off with a small sum of cash from the home of a businessman in Co Tipperary.

Three men armed with at least two guns entered the businessman's home in Monard at around 12.20am.

They assaulted the man and demanded cash while his three children were asleep nearby.

A number of shots were fired at gardaí as the raiders escaped on foot across fields to the rear of the premises. One family member was treated for minor injuries in Our Lady's Hospital Cashel.

The scene is being preserved for technical examination this morning, and searches in the area are ongoing. All three raiders were armed and masked.
