Crime scene:There was an air of deep shock, and some anger, at the scene of yesterday's shooting as Garda forensic experts examined the taxi in which John Daly was returning home when he was attacked by his killer.

A Garda cordon was established around Cloonlara Drive and surrounding roads in Finglas south yesterday morning, as residents of the quiet working-class estate went about their business, at times stopping to converse among themselves.

Some were clearly angry to see members of the media gathered at the scene. Others expressed shock that the 27-year-old man could be killed so close to their homes.

As photographers and journalists attempted to interview local residents and photograph the scene yesterday morning, one blond-haired young woman dressed in her pyjamas angrily claimed that details of her brother's home address had been given out by the media. This in turn had caused his death, she said.

She made her comments as she walked past the Garda cordon towards the scene of the shooting.

It was not clear yesterday whether she was specifically referring to the murder of Daly, who previously sparked a major clampdown on the use of mobile phones in Irish prisons after calling RTÉ's Liveline radio programme.

Another woman, who was walking towards a nearby parked car warned this reporter not to approach her, expressing the belief that all media were "scumbags."

William Dolan, who lives on nearby Cloonlara Crescent, said he was "sickened" by the murder.

"I've seen nothing like it here before. This is a great crescent, there are nice people in it," he said. "I didn't know him personally, I didn't know his family.

"The only thing my missus told me was that she heard a car squealing through the area, and after that nothing."

Another woman returning home with her shopping said she has lived on the estate for 35 years.

"Anybody would be devastated," she said. "I've reared my family here and I've had no problems . . . I like it here, I have no regrets. But it's like the wild west, it's like Chicago or something."

Her neighbour said the first she heard about the shooting was when she turned on the radio news yesterday morning. She was shocked to hear about a murder taking place just around the corner from her home.

"You hear about the odd thing happening here and there, but nothing like this. I was just shocked when I heard."
