Sheringham continues to roll back the years

Premiership round-up

Teddy Sheringham hit a hat-trick as Portsmouth went top of the Barclaycard Premiership as their unbeaten start to the season continued at Fratton Park.

Sheringham strutted his stuff in the 4-0 win over Bolton, reminiscent of his glory days at Manchester United and Tottenham. But this was far from a one-man show although clearly Sheringham's heroics, crowned by two goals in the closing five minutes, will reverberate all the way back to White Hart Lane where he was allowed to leave on a free transfer at the end of the last season.

There were no goals in a lively first half but once Pompey got going Bolton were overwhelmed and finished with a repeat of their defeat by Manchester United on the opening day of the campaign.

At the Walkers Stadium, Middlesbrough regained their pride - and collected their first point of the campaign - in a no-frills, goalless encounter with Leicester.

Steve McClaren's side showed far more resolution after their 4-0 drubbing by Arsenal at the Riverside Stadium on Sunday - a performance which was branded as "not acceptable" by skipper Gareth Southgate.

But there was certainly plenty of commitment evident on this occasion from the visitors. They restricted Leicester to a handful of chances and there was an impressive debut from Gaizka Mendieta in midfield.

The Spanish player, on an initial year's loan from Lazio, finally obtained international clearance and showed enough inventiveness to suggest he will be a big asset once he gains full match fitness.

No goals either at Elland Road where Leeds and Southampton are still searching for their first wins of the season after a night of frustration. Two home draws have now sandwiched a defeat at Tottenham for Leeds, who failed to score for the first time in 11 games under boss Peter Reid, while Southampton have taken a point from each of their opening three matches.

For both sides their points haul, even at this early stage of the season, will be of concern as neither has yet played the main title contenders in Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea.

Elsewhere, Wayne Rooney scored a stunning goal in front of Sven-Goran Eriksson to earn Everton a 2-2 draw at Charlton.

The 17-year-old was left out of the England squad for Wednesday's 3-1 victory against Croatia, but is in line for a recall to face Macedonia and Liechtenstein in the vital Euro 2004 qualifiers.

And Rooney, recovering from his summer ankle ligament injury, showed he is nearing full fitness by scoring a wonderful goal in this entertaining clash at The Valley.
