Shelbourne 0 Hibernians 1
(Aggregate: 2-3)
Shelbourne suffered a cruel exit from the Champions League at Tolka Park tonight after Maltese outfit Hibernians scored an injury-time winner to secure a lucrative second round qualifying tie with Portuguese side Boavista.
Pat Fenlon’s team came into tonight’s second leg with the cushion of two away goals scored in last week’s draw in Malta but the domestic champions failed to put away a bag of chances to kill off the tie.
Trevor Molly spurned a number of opportunities in both halves. In the first half, the former St Patrick’s Athletic striker found himself unmarked in the area but could only head a tame effort straight at Hibernians ‘keeper Muscat. After the break, the lively netminder foiled Molloy once again with a fine save with his feet.
Hibernians, who were easily outclassed throughout the contest, broke forward in the first minute of added time to inflict the crucial blow. Substitute Zahra was sent free down the right flank and cut inside before dinking a smart ball into the path of the onrushing Ndubisi Chukinyere who beat Shels ‘keeper Steve Williams from eight yards.
