ANYONE who witnessed a hit and run accident at Rochestown Avenue, Dun Laoghaire, early yesterday morning has been asked by the Garda to assist in its inquiries.

The incident took place at 2.20 a.m. near the junction with Ruby Hall when a 20 year old man was knocked down by a small car which failed to stop; he is now seriously injured in hospital. The car was last seen turning into Pottery Road.

Seven people were killed in weekend accidents, five of them on the road. On Saturday afternoon a motorcyclist was killed when be collided with an oncoming car at Rock Road, Blackrock, Co Dublin.

A 17 year old pillion passenger on a motorcycle was killed when it collided with a tractor and trailer near Lixnaw, Co Kerry, on Saturday morning. She was Anita Lyne, who lived locally. The motorcyclist was injured.

Another fatal accident took place at Ardclooney bridge on the back road between Limerick and Killaloe, Co Clare, when a car overturned at 1.15 a.m. on Saturday. The driver, Mr Oliver Gunning (23), of Kilbane, Broadford, Co Clare, was killed.

The RUC is appealing for witnesses to an accident in Carrickfergus, Co Antrim, in which Ms Diane Wilson (18), was hit by a Rover car while crossing the Belfast road. She died yesterday.

A 21 year old man died after falling from a pick up truck in Co Tyrone. He was Mr Stephen Ward, of Camlough Road, Carrickmore. In Ballymena, Co Antrim, a seven year old boy died on Friday night after a set of steel goalposts he was erecting came crashing down on him. The child died at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

The body of a 16 year old boy was recovered by the lifeboat service after he fell into the sea near Islandmagee on the Ant rim coast. It is understood the teenager fell from Gobbins Path on Saturday evening.
