Seven people were killed this morning in a multiple crash on the M56 motorway near Manchester.

A police spokeswoman said the accident, which happened south of Manchester, is believed to have involved four vehicles, including a mini-bus, adding that two people are in a serious condition in hospital.

Police warned motorists they faced long delays and to avoid the area if possible.

"Junctions Two to Four westbound on the M56 are completely closed and only one lane is open eastbound," the spokeswoman said.
