THE SEARCH continued yesterday for a 19-year-old Scottish tourist who was overcome by a wave and swept out to sea in Baltimore, Co Cork on Saturday morning.
The teenager was in west Cork on a weekend break with friends when tragedy struck. The youth is believed to have been taking photographs under the cliffs near a place known locally as “Spain” with a friend at about 7.30am on Saturday when they were hit by a wave and washed out to sea.
His friend managed to recover, get back on land and raise the alarm at a nearby house. He was unharmed in the incident.
Some items of clothing and a camera were found in the sea close to where he was last seen. The teenager’s family are now in Baltimore as the search for his body continues. However, his name is not being made public.
Baltimore RNLI, a Coast Guard helicopter and the Naval vessel the LE Róisínyesterday carried out extensive searches of the area.
John Draper of the Valentia Coastguard said “We have Rescue 117 which is a helicopter from Waterford. We also have the Baltimore inshore lifeboat doing the seaward search and Toe Head Coast Guard, Castlefreke Coast Guard and the Glandore Coast Guard. Unfortunately our Navy divers and Garda divers had to suspend diving operations this morning due to heavy swell conditions there.”
