Detectives investigating the murder of teenager Arlene Arkinson who disappeared in 1994 have resumed a series of searches in rural locations in Co Tyrone.

Following on from searches last year, the resumed operation has the twin objectives of recovering the schoolgirl's remains and progressing the investigation.

A team of officers using specialist PSNI search dogs are conducting searches at a number of locations.

Arlene (15) disappeared after a night out in Bundoran, Co Donegal in the early hours of  August 14th, 1994. Her body has never been found.

In 2005, 61-year-old Robert Howard stood trial for Arlene’s murder but was acquitted.

He is serving a life sentence in Frankland Prison, Durham, for the rape and murder of 14-year-old Hannah Williams, whose body was found at a cement works in Northfleet, Kent, in March 2002.

Detectives have been in contact with Arlene's family to provide them with a general update on the overall situation.
