A search is continuing today for a champion camogie player who has gone missing in the North.

Karen Coyles (47) disappeared from Ballycastle, Co Antrim, on Sunday evening.

Her car, a silver Volkswagen Golf, was found at McQuillan’s GAA club in the town the following morning. Friends and relatives of Ms Coyles first realised there was something wrong when she did not turn up for work.

Coastguard teams, a police helicopter and people who know her are assisting officers with the search.

Ms Coyles, who works at the University of Ulster’s Coleraine campus at the research institute, leads the McQuillan’s camogie team and is the goalkeeper. She lives alone in the Ballycastle area.

At the weekend she captained the winning team in the all-Ireland camogie Sevens tournament in Dublin.

A representative of the club said her disappearance was completely out of character.

“We don’t know where she could be, we are searching everywhere,” he said.

Seamus Blaney, independent councillor in Ballycastle, said they were searching inland and at sea. “She is full of beans, she lives for the camogie, she is always lifting funds for it,” he said. “It is a mystery, the whole thing. It is not like her to disappear like that.”
