A Scottish man has died in hospital after contracting Britain's first case of rabies for 100 years.
Mr David McRae, from Guthrie, Angus, in eastern Scotland was being treated at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee after he was bitten by a bat.
He was confirmed as suffering from European Bat Lyssavirus (EBL), a type of rabies found in several northern European countries. He had worked with bats for 15 years and had been bitten on at least one occasion.
Mr McRae had a licence to handle bats issued by the wildlife agency Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH), for which he had carried out research.
A SNH spokesman said Mr McRae's death was a "bleak day for everyone involved in conservation in Scotland".
