Salvation Army opens Japan fund

A Japan disaster fund has been set up by the Salvation Army in Britain and Ireland to help survivors of the earthquake.

Emergency relief teams have been giving out food and fresh water to people in affected areas and centres have opened to provide shelter to those unable to return to their homes.

Donations can be given online at salvationarmy.org.uk or by telephone at 0800 028 9111. The phone line is open 24 hours.

Alternatively, postal donations can be sent to The Japanese Disaster Fund, Fundraising and Marketing, The Salvation Army Territorial Headquarters, 101 Newington Causeway, London SE1 6BN.

"The devastation is huge and the impact on the lives of the people is severe" said Marion Drew, secretary for communications for the Salvation Army. "In the months to come, we will be helping to rebuild the lives of families who have lost everything."
