Ryanair hijack suspect appeals his detention

The Swedish man suspected of planning to hijack a Ryanair plane has begun an appeal against his detention.

The Swedish man suspected of planning to hijack a Ryanair plane has begun an appeal against his detention.

Mr Kerim Sadok Chatt (29) was seized last week as he was boarding the flight bound for London Stansted after a gun was found in his hand luggage.

Prosecutors say he was planning to hijack the plane and a court ordered him detained on Monday for two weeks while police investigate the case and prosecutors prepare charges.

Mr Chatty, who was questioned further today, admits to having the gun but denies planning a hijack.

"Chatty demands that the court of appeal should overturn the decision of the district court and rule that there are no serious grounds to suspect him of planning a hijack and so the reasons for detention no longer apply," defence lawyer Mr Nils Uggla said in a submission to the court.

The case has been classified as secret, and Mr Uggla is not allowed to give details of the grounds for the appeal.

The appeal court has three options - it can reject the appeal, it can review the documents from Monday's detention hearing and make a ruling on that basis, or it could hold its own hearings, which would probably be behind closed doors.
