THE MINISTER for Communications, Eamon Ryan, has said advice he has received from the Attorney General should allow him to proceed with appointments to broadcasting boards, writes Mary Minihan.

Last week Mr Ryan put a stay on the appointment of candidates recommended by himself and the Oireachtas committee to the boards of both RTÉ and the new Broadcasting Authority of Ireland and sought advice that the appointment of people to the boards who were themselves involved with broadcasting complied with the Broadcasting Act.

The Minister for Communications appeared before the Oireachtas committee on communications yesterday evening to clarify the delay in appointing nominees.

“The Attorney General’s advice is very clear, so it gives us real confidence that we can proceed,” he told the committee.
