Daniel Day-Lewis has also been nominated for Leading Actor for his role in There Will Be Blood.

The Baftas could steal the limelight away from the Oscars this year because of the ongoing writers' strike, which has thrown the Academy Awards into jeopardy.

This year's Golden Globes ceremony, where Atonement won Best Film, was replaced by a short press conference and no stars turned up.

Day-Lewis will be competing in the leading actor category with Hollywood heartthrob George Clooney for 'Michael Clayton', Viggo Mortensen 'Eastern Promises' and Ulrich Muhe in the 'Lives Of Others'.
