Rome has declared its candidature for the 2005 World Athletics Championships, the Italian Athletics Federation (FIDAL) said today.
The candidature was announced by Gianni Gola, president of FIDAL, in agreement with former football legend Gianni Rivera, now director of sport of the Rome city government.
Several cities are in the running to host the championships, with Brussels, Budapest, Helsinki, Moscow all being tipped to make bids. Berlin, Munich and Stuttgart are also in the frame, although only one German city will be allowed to bid.
The 2005 championships had been awarded to London, who had been stripped of the event when plans for a new Wembley stadium failed to include an athletics track.
The IAAF will choose the host city in Nairobi on April 14th.
