A roadside bomb exploded outside a sprawling US base in Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit today, wounding three soldiers, one seriously, a US Army spokesman said.
The explosives were detonated just outside a gate at the headquarters for Task Force Ironhorse as two US Humvee vehicles were passing, said First Lieutenant Don Calderwood, a spokesman for the 1st Brigade, 22nd Infantry Battalion.
Calderwood said two soldiers, one in a serious condition, were taken to the base hospital. One was slightly wounded and treated at a nearby aid station.
Calderwood had no details on the type of explosive used. Roadside bombs, often made from grenades or shells, are a favourite weapon by insurgents battling the US occupation.
Guerrilla attacks have killed 94 US soldiers since US President George W. Bush declared major combat over on May 1st.
