ORGANISERS OF the Thomond Swim were forced to cancel the event in Limerick at the weekend due to bad weather and safety concerns.
After an absence of 20 years, the swim on the river Shannon has been revived and this year’s event was due to take place last Saturday afternoon.
Some 40 swimmers braved wet weather conditions and entered the water as planned at 2pm but organisers were forced to call them back.
“We had to call it off for safety reasons. The tide should have been rising which it was but because of all the rain in the past few weeks, the flow of the river was too much and there was too much water coming down river,” said organiser Andrea Newport.
According to Ms Newport, who swims with Limerick Masters, a meeting will be held later this week to discuss rescheduling the swim.
