Short films charting the struggle of dissidents, exploited labourers, Travellers and same-sex couples have been shortlisted for the human rights film awards run by the Irish Council for Civil Liberties.

The judges include actor Brenda Fricker and director Kristen Sheridan. Sheridan said the shortlist showed a huge diversity of minority groups and gave them a voice.

Senator David Norris, who is also a judge, said every film on the shortlist was an important insight into minorities in Ireland and abroad.

The shortlisted films will be screened at the Light House cinema in Dublin on June 28th, when the winner will be announced.
