The annual commemoration at Soloheadbeg in Co Tipperary used to be a very Republican occasion, given that the actual event, on January 21st, 1919, in which Dan Breen, Sean Treacy and comrades killed two RIC men guarding a cartload of gelignite, marked the first shots in the War of Independence. It has been less so in recent years in that relatives of the dead policemen have turned up. Now, tomorrow, that scion of the local ascendancy landlords, Martin Mansergh, is delivering the address by the roadside at 3 p.m. Mansergh, adviser to the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern on Northern Ireland and previously to Charles Haughey, will be delivering his own script on this occasion. His family home is a mile down the road at Grenane.
