Residents in Kimmage, Dublin, protested yesterday against the removal of a gate-post belonging to a local listed building.

One pillar of the regency-style gate, which dates from the 1830s and leads to the home of the former Recorder of Dublin, Sir Frederick Shaw, at Kimmage Manor, had been removed by developers who planned to put it in a new housing estate.

More than 500 residents have signed a petition seeking the preservation of the gate, which unlike the house, is not listed by the Heritage Council for protection.
