Owensboro - A Kentucky newspaper has apologised to its readers for running columns by a reporter about her struggle with terminal cancer, which she later admitted she did not have.

"We have been misled, and in turn, misled you about a deeply emotional story," Mr T. Edward Riney, the publisher of the Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer, wrote in a front-page apology. Former colleagues at another newspaper challenged Ms Kim Stacy after they noticed discrepancies in what she wrote and what she had told them.
