The former Dublin assistant city and county manager, George Redmond, entered guilty pleas on 10 charges of failing to make tax returns yesterday. His case will go forward to the next sitting of the Dublin Central Criminal Court.
It is expected that the facts of the case will be outlined when it comes for hearing, before the judge hands down a sentence. It is open to Redmond to change his plea when the case comes up in this court.
Redmond (75) of Deerpark Lawns, Castleknock, Dublin, made a brief appearance before the Dublin District Court yesterday, and was remanded on his own bail of £500 and independent bail, put up by his son, of £500.
The court was told that he had handed in his passport and had undertaken not to seek another one. He signed guilty pleas in court.
Redmond spoke once during the hearing. When asked if he agreed not to apply for another passport, he said: "Yes, your worship."
He was charged under the Tax Consolidation Act on 10 counts of failing to make tax returns between 1988 and 1998. The charges arise from his arrest, with £300,000, at Dublin Airport last February by officers of the Criminal Assets Bureau.
Mr Patrick Geraghty of the Chief State Solicitor's Office, asked Judge Claire Leonard to make an order that the book of evidence should be available in case Redmond changed his plea in the Circuit Criminal Court.
Judge Leonard said such an order could be made if he changed his plea.
