The aid agency Concern has condemned an attack on one of its volunteer workers, who is from Sierra Leone, writes Paul Cullen, Development Correspondent.

Three men racially abused and then beat up Mr David M'Carthy 100 yards from his home in Rialto on Easter Sunday evening. He was taken by a friend to hospital and treated for cuts and bruises.

Concern's chief executive, Mr David Begg, said he was deeply shocked and saddened by the attack. It would be foolish to ignore the increase in racist attacks, he warned.

The attack follows a brutal assault on a 17-year-old Congolese youth, also over the Easter weekend. Mr Lundu Kulabululu was beaten about the head with a bottle on Lower Liffey Street. Mr Kulabululu, who came to Ireland as an asylum-seeker 11 months ago, received 16 stitches in his head and face.
