Trouble broke out on the Limestone Road shortly after 9 p.m. when police attempted to separate rival nationalist and loyalist groups.

Officers were attacked by both sides throwing bottles bricks and fireworks.

Earlier yesterday 70 children were prevented from leaving Currie Primary School for a time when opposing factions confronted each other.

A police spokesman said the incident, which involved stone throwing, led to a minor stand-off.
