In a debate in which MEPs expressed concern at the nuclear tests carried out by India, council president Douglas Henderson said the EU's response would be "measured" and "proportionate". He did not think that the EU would be following the US in introducing sanctions, although three Member States - Germany, Sweden and Denmark - have already announced measures to freeze aid. He did say the issue would be on the agenda of the Council meeting on May 25th, that protests had been sent to the Indian government and that the EU favoured an approach based on dialogue, especially as Russia had decided not to follow the US in imposing sanctions.
Former French Prime Minister Michel Rocard (PES) called on France and the UK to take the lead in promoting nuclear disarmament in Asia. The issue is to be taken up in a new parliamentary report on relations with India.
