A young Dublin remand prisoner died of a drugs overdose in a cell in St Patrick's Institution just five days before his 21st birthday, Dublin City Coroner's Court heard yesterday.

Mr Jason Byrne (20), Markievicz House, Townsend Street, was pronounced dead at the Mater Hospital on October 24th, 1998. He had been arrested at Mespil Road the previous morning and remanded in custody.

A post-mortem showed he died of a combination overdose of methadone, anti-depressant and sedative drugs.

The jury returned a verdict of death by misadventure.
