Zimbabwe President Mr Robert Mugabe has announced a tough new media law placing curbs on the independent and foreign press, the official gazette announced today.

The media law requires journalists to seek accreditation from a panel hand-picked by Information Minister Mr Jonathan Moyo that has wide-ranging powers of discretion.
The law also forbids journalists from reporting on meetings of the cabinet or other government bodies.
The Draconian new legislation takes effect two days after Mr Mugabe won re-election in a vote widely condemned as fraudulent.
