Graeme Souness suffered a case of deja vu as his Blackburn side went down to Liverpool in the Carling Cup at Ewood Park.

Emile Heskey was the matchwinner with two goals while Lucas Neill was sent off - his second red card against Liverpool this season.

Black burn opened the scoring through Dwight Yorke after he headed home a David Thompson cross in the 35th minute. Liverpool replied six minutes later when Neill was dismissed for taking down Florent Sinama Pongolle. Murphy dispatched the penalty.

Liverpool took control in the second half and Heskey grabbed his first when El Hadji Diouf crossed from the left and the bug striker headed home at the near post.

Heskey and Diouf combined for a near identical goal on the hour before the England man stepped up to take Liverpool's second penalty, only for Friedel to save comfortably.

The scoring however was far from over and after more tormenting by Diouf on the left side Harry Kewell gratefully slotted it home ten minutes from the end.

Blackburn never let their heads drop though and got a lifeline a minute later when a neat move culminated in Barry Ferguson scoring his first for the club.

Dwight Yorke's 91st minute second and Blackburn's third was too late to make a real impact however.

Two goals from Eidur Gudjohnsen, a stunning 30-yard drive from Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and a late strike from Joe Cole sent Chelsea cruising into the fourth round at the expense of Notts County.

But the Barclaycard Premiership giants did not have it all their own way against their cash-strapped visitors, who at one point were all-square following Tony Barras' well-worked - and thoroughly deserved - equaliser in the 27th minute.

Thomas Hitzlsperger's powerfully-struck drive finally broke the resistance of a radically revamped Leicester line-up at a rain- swept Villa Park.

The German Under-21 midfielder ended a frustrating night for David O'Leary's side when he came off the bench to score his first goal of the season 14 minutes from time.

Newcastle's recent good form came to an end as they were defeated 2-1 by West Brom in extra time. Lee Hughes grabbing the crucial goal for the visitors.

Tobias Linderoth's first ever goal for Everton took them into the fourth round. The Swede struck with a close range first-half header after Wayne Rooney's shot had hit the bar.

Middlesbrough rode their luck to reach the fourth round of the Carling Cup with victory over Wigan at the JJB Stadium tonight.

Massimo Maccarone and Gaizka Mendieta helped Boro to a victory they scarcely deserved.

Bobby Zamora scored the winner for Tottenham as they saw off London rivals West Ham in extra time.
