Lucinda Creighton: Sinn Féin stance doesn’t hold water

Sinn Féin's stance on water charges proves it is not fit for government, according to Renua Ireland leader Lucinda Creighton.

Ms Creighton on Monday criticised Sinn Féin’s position on the charges after it said it would, if elected, scrap water charges but ruled out refunding those who had paid their bills.

“Sinn Féin a few months ago were in favour of water charges. Then they faced losing the byelection in Dublin South West so they changed their mind,” Ms Creighton said. “I believe they are now telling people don’t bother paying but if you did pay we won’t be refunding you if we are in government’.

“I don’t believe that Sinn Féin is seriously contemplating government, full-stop. I think Sinn Féin enjoys being a party of protest, a party of opposition and it is an easy, convenient place to be to sit on the fence.

“We need leadership; we need honesty from all political parties in opposition and in government. Sinn Féin are very well aware that what they are saying in opposition is not going to be upheld if they get into government.”

Renua supports the introduction of water charges.

Sinn Féin deputy leader Mary Lou McDonald said the position of the party was clear and insisted the anger over the charges would remain until an early election was called. “People want their opportunity to pass their verdict on this administration but perhaps more importantly, the opportunity to elect a new government,” she said.
