Fianna Fáil TD Michael Kitt retires from politics

Fianna Fáil TD Michael Kitt has confirmed his retirement from politics.

The Leas-Cheann Comhairle said he would not be contesting the next general election in Galway East.

He said: “I wish to thank the people of Galway East for their immense support over the past 40 years.

“It has been a privilege to represent the constituency in Dáil Éireann and work on behalf of communities across Co Galway.

“I also want to thank the Fianna Fáil organisation for their great support and assistance throughout my career.”

Mr Kitt was first elected to the Dáil in 1975.

He contested a byelection and 11 general elections throughout his long political career.

He has served as Minister of State in three departments and is now the Leas-Cheann Comhairle of Dáil Éireann.

The news will come as a huge relief to his constituency colleague Colm Keaveney, who is now the only Fianna Fáil candidate.

Party leader Micheál Martin paid tribute to Mr Kitt, who he described as a highly valuable member of the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party.

He said: “He has been a distinguished and dedicated representative for the people of Co Galway and has worked diligently on behalf of communities across the county.

“He has also played an important role in shaping Fianna Fáil policy throughout the years. I want to wish Michael a happy and healthy retirement, and I look forward to his continued involvement in the organisation.”
