The senior management structure of the Police Service of Northern Ireland was strengthened today with the appointment of two new Assistant Chief Constables.
The promotion of Chief Superintendents Duncan McCausland (43) and Roy Toner (40) from within the PSNI bring to six the number of officers at the rank within the service.
It fills gaps in the upper ranks which have been created by the number of top officers taking early retirement under the Patten reforms.
It is still three down on the official establishment of ACCs in the PSNI, but under the Patten policing reforms a number of key positions have been civilianised and it is unlikely there will be nine assistant chief constables again.
The two men were appointed by the Policing Board after interviews of six shortlisted candidates.
